Save Mediterranean Bluefin Tuna - Before it's too Late

Mediterranean bluefin tuna is on the brink of commercial and biological collapse, driven by the uncontrolled demand for its high quality meat for sushi around the world.

The root cause lies in decades of mismanagement. But the solution is now in the hands of restaurant owners, chefs, retailers and consumers, like you, to bring this magnificent species back from the brink.

he International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has been responsible for the management of Mediterranean bluefin tuna for more than 40 years. But, its quota system has failed, and the species is now threatened by illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, and a dramatic overcapacity of fishing fleets.

If the current situation continues then time will soon run out for this amazing creature.

The loss of Mediterranean bluefin tuna would be an economic and ecological disaster. WWF has time and again urged the adoption of a management plan based on advice from international scientists. But with ICCAT choosing not to listen, WWF is now calling for a 3 year moratorium – to regain control over the fishery and allow stocks to recover – and the boycott of the species by consumers, retailers, chefs and restaurants.

2008 is a crucial year for Mediterranean tuna. ICCAT will be meeting in November and it will be one of the last chances to save this vulnerable species.
